In life, I am a big believer in a "why not" life philosophy, which results, more often than not, to saying yes whenever possible. Yes to opportunity. Yes to new friendships. Yes to helping people out. Why not?
When Meghan and Jeff contacted me at the last minute about photographing their upcoming wedding, and mentioning that they were supposed to be having an engagement shoot THAT Friday because they weren't local and would only be in town that weekend... I had a moment of pause because it all seemed too good to be true. But I said "yes! Why not?" to myself, and so, in a whirlwind, I was photographing their engagement session less than a week after being booked for a wedding that was coming up in less than two months. Crazy where this work can take you sometimes and how quickly things can change!
Well I'm sure glad I did. As soon as I met them, I felt like we were meant to work together all along. They were easy going, they were smiling. They were kind and fun and mellow. We met at the Charles River Esplanade, because they had started dating properly back when they were both working at MIT.
In a funny twist, we arrived at the Esplanade to Christmas music blasting through the speakers. In July. Everyone was a little baffled (including random passersby making comments about how strange it was). Then I remembered they were showing Elf that night on the Hatch Shell movie night, and we collectively did an "oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh". Well, why not celebrate summer in Boston with a little Christmas Music, right?! It kept us laughing throughout the session. Every time Meghan and Jeff tensed up, I would yell "EMBRACE THE CHRISTMAS SEASON! IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR, FOR GOODNESS SAKE!" And we would all start laughing. Sometimes, you just gotta roll with these things and find a way to make them work with whatever you're doing! Can't control all circumstance, but you can control your reaction to them, and I choose to laugh whenever possible!
After the Esplanade, we hopped in an Uber over to MIT, Photographing the Dome was really important to Meghan, and as we walked up, a Segway Tour was rolling through. So we took loving, meaningful engagement photos in front of an audience of tourists. Again, just gotta roll with these things and laugh your way through.
And then, as we wrapped up at MIT, the sun was dipping low, and the entire river was bathed in the beautiful golden light that only twilight on a cloudless summer day can deliver. It was magical. Meghan and Jeff, I cannot WAIT to photograph your wedding this fall. These are two beautiful souls perfectly paired. If it is all as amazing as this quick, semi-impromptu engagement shoot was, it's going to be the stuff of dreams and lifelong stories.
