This past Friday, on a chilly, post-snow-day evening, I had the privilege of not just documenting a love story unfolding, but actually taking a small role myself! When Marek contacted me a few months ago about photographing his proposal to his girlfriend, Jamie, during a visit to Boston, I was so excited. He had a really sweet idea to use wooden signs to write out "You had me at hello", displayed next to the famous Make Way For Ducklings signs in the Boston Public Garden downtown. He asked if I might be willing to make the signs and set them up. I rarely get to incorporate painting into my clients' wedding related requests, so this was a fun little project. Never let it be said that I'm not willing to go the extra mile for my clients' memories!
I arrived early, set up the signs, staked out a spot to casually hang out and try not to give myself away (much harder when there are no leaves on the trees or lawn to sprawl out nonchalantly), but still had to battle wind and tourists. I don't know how many people took photos of the ducks with the signs before Marek and Jamie arrived, but let's just say, they were well documented! Soon enough, I spotted Marek strolling down the path with Jamie, and he dropped down on one knee. Jamie was surprised, excited... and also inundated with tourists gushing about this sweet gesture.
After the proposal, we wandered around the Garden in the snow, taking a few portraits to remember the occasion. It was slippery, it was cold, and it was wet, but Marek and Jamie were in such blissful spirits, it didn't matter.
It was such a lovely evening to start off a beautiful life for this lovely couple. I'm so glad that they chose me to be part of it, late night sign painting and all. Congratulations, Marek and Jamie!
